Pearland, TX, April 27, 2020 — The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department at the City of Pearland, Texas has gained the attention of citizens and city officials as they utilize available software to maintain transparency on COVID-19 in their city and surrounding areas.
Keeping their community informed during this pandemic is the GIS team’s utmost priority. GIS is an innovative approach to community awareness and engagement, and it diligently provides city employees — such as police, firefighters, public works employees, engineers, and the IT team — accurate and geo-enabled information to safely and efficiently perform the duties of their jobs.
In addition to the daily support of city services, GIS recently launch the COVID-19 Dashboard to present a situational awareness view with information integrated from multiple sources and systems. Now all Pearland citizens and surrounding communities can benefit from GIS. Team members automated processes and custom-coded scripts to combine real-time information with a simple user-interface designed to present a summarized view of current pandemic conditions. The dashboard also includes options to further analyze data for higher-level analysis and tracking.
“Part of our automation processes in keeping the dashboard updated was by incorporating GeoAdaptor from GTG,” explains Mike Masters, GIS Manager for the City. The platform integrates data from Brazoria, Harris, and Fort Bend Counties’ health authorities, as well. COVID-19 case numbers are updated hourly and show statistics at the city, county, and state levels.
The Pearland GIS division remains committed to providing their community with service “The Pearland Way.” The residents and their needs are what motivates the GIS team to strive for excellent, dedicated, and committed service, and all team members work diligently to make Pearland a city that citizens are proud to call home.
